Cross-platform apps from product concept to store release.

A mobile app is more than a collection of screens. Beyond the user interface, it involves both technical and product decisions around navigation, data storage, authentication, error states, backend integration, builds, updates, and app store requirements.

I build cross-platform apps with React Native and Expo—working as a developer within existing product teams or, where needed, providing additional support with product structure, technical design, and iterative development.

Working within the product team

App development is an iterative process. Requirements, designs, and technical solutions evolve throughout development based on user feedback.

In established product organizations, I work alongside product management, UX, design, backend teams, and other stakeholders, taking responsibility for the technical implementation of the mobile app. I also contribute my experience in software architecture, product development, and technical decision-making.

For smaller companies or newly formed product teams, I can also help structure the development process: defining the scope of an initial version, translating requirements into testable increments, and establishing short feedback cycles.

The extent of that support depends on the project and the roles already in place.

App structure and technical architecture

Depending on the application, this may include:

  • navigation and user flows
  • application states and data flows
  • authentication and user accounts
  • local and server-side data storage
  • backend and API integration
  • handling errors and unavailable connections
  • push notifications
  • subscriptions or in-app purchases

I can design the technical architecture of a new app, work within an existing architecture, or take responsibility for specific areas of an established product.

Development with React Native and Expo

React Native provides a largely shared technical foundation for iOS and Android. Expo simplifies many aspects of native integration, builds, and release.

Depending on the project, I build new apps, extend existing applications, or take responsibility for individual areas within a larger development effort.

App backends and integrations

Depending on the project, I can also build or integrate the required app backend—for example with Firebase and TypeScript, or by connecting to existing APIs.

This may include:

  • authentication
  • data models and databases
  • Cloud Functions
  • file and media storage
  • integrations with existing systems

I integrate existing backend systems and APIs into the app and coordinate the mobile implementation with the teams responsible for them.

Builds and store release

An app project does not end with a version that runs locally. Where needed, I also support the technical process through to release:

  • iOS and Android builds
  • signing and certificates
  • internal and external test releases
  • store configuration
  • technical preparation and support during submission
  • technical adjustments during the review process
  • preparation for future updates

Apps are usually released through the client’s own developer accounts. Where needed, I assist with their technical setup and with submission to the Apple App Store and Google Play.
